A Journey of Hope: Two New Homes, Countless Lives Changed

Last night, I returned home from Cape Verde with a heart that is fuller than ever.
Every time I step onto the islands, I am reminded that our work is about so much more than bricks, cement, or construction. It is about restoring hope where it has been lost, replacing uncertainty with security, and giving families something every human being deserves—a place to call home.
This trip was especially emotional.
One Home Delivered. Another Nearly Ready.
One of the greatest joys of this journey was handing over the keys to Nana's brand-new home on the beautiful island of Brava.
Just months ago, Nana lived in conditions that no one should have to endure. Her home was deteriorating, offering little protection from the elements and little comfort for everyday life.
Today, everything has changed.
She now has a beautiful, safe home with clean running water, electricity, proper sanitation, and a place she can proudly welcome family and friends. What was once only a dream has become her new reality.
Watching her smile as she stepped inside her new home reminded us why we do this work.
Those moments stay with you forever.
A New Beginning for Arminda and Her Children
While celebrating Nana's new beginning, we also visited another family whose lives are about to change forever.
Arminda and her two children are preparing to leave behind a life that no family should ever experience.
For years, they have lived in a makeshift shelter built from wood, metal sheets, and cardboard. It provided little protection from the weather and even less security for her children.
Standing there, watching her children smile despite having so little, was incredibly humbling.
But hope is already taking shape.
Just a few weeks from now, Arminda and her children will walk through the front door of their own brand-new, fully furnished home.
A place where they can sleep safely.
A place with clean water.
A bathroom.
A kitchen.
Real beds.
Electricity.
A home filled with dignity instead of hardship.
For these children, this isn't simply moving to another house.
It is the beginning of an entirely new life.
This Is Your Story Too
Although Anthony and I have the privilege of standing beside these families, these homes do not belong to us.
They belong to every person who believed this mission was worth supporting.
Every donation.
Every share on social media.
Every encouraging message.
Every prayer.
Every act of kindness.
Each one became part of these homes.
As we traveled throughout Cape Verde, something became very clear.
People are beginning to recognize that there are individuals around the world who genuinely care about them.
Many may never know your names.
But they know your compassion.
They know that strangers chose to love them without expecting anything in return.
That realization is changing communities.
More Than Building Houses
People often ask what the Nilza Varela Foundation does.
The answer is simple.
We don't just build homes.
We restore dignity.
We create opportunity.
We strengthen families.
We give children a safer future.
We remind people that they have not been forgotten.
Every completed project becomes a symbol of hope—not only for the family receiving it, but for neighbors who begin believing that tomorrow can be different.
Hope is contagious.
And together, we are spreading it throughout Cape Verde.
